Charleston Farmhouse Garden

My first work of art created in the run-up to Sky Landscape Artist of the Year heat.

Charleston holds a very special place in my heart. I was bought up in Lewes, East Sussex, and showed an early interest in all things creative, art especially. Charleston is a short drive away from Lewes and I’ve visited the house many times in my lifetime. In the last few years, Jason & I became Omega members, supporting the ongoing program of events and development of the heritage of the foundation. It has given me the opportunity to learn more about Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, and the other amazing creatives that spent time at the property. Of course, this has absolutely influenced the subject of some of my art.

It felt fitting to start my journey with the development of some observational sketches I made back in 2019 into a larger canvas.

A hazy summer’s day in the garden, artichokes flourishing in the vegetable beds, the sun reflecting brightly in the windows. I wanted to create a sense of creative transience within the garden against the history & significance of the farmhouse.

Acrylic paints, oils pastels & enamel on canvas, 2020.
