Artist Statement 2021
JOANNA MYLES b. 1978
Joanna Myles’ work explores human relationships with the objects we gather and keep in our homes and the landscapes we live in. She explores these through a variety of mediums, more recently leaning towards paintings on canvas as well as inks and lino prints on paper. Joanna often works on two pieces of art at a time, each influencing the other in colour and mark-making.
Drawing and observation of social interactions are key to her practice as an artist. This often starts as a casual sketch and eventually finds itself as pencil finishing.

The Turner Contemporary Open
To mark our 10th anniversary and ten years on from our first Open, this open submission exhibition will celebrate and showcase the wealth of artistic talent living, working and training in Kent.
The Turner Contemporary Open is an open submission exhibition that marks our 10th anniversary.
Over 10 years on from Turner Contemporary’s first Open, and in celebration of the gallery’s 10th anniversary, Turner Contemporary is pleased to present The Turner Contemporary Open.
This ambitious exhibition will celebrate and showcase the wealth of artistic talent in Kent and Medway. It will include works by both professional and non-professional artists living and working in the area and those working nationally and internationally who studied there.
Opening on 23 October 2021 and spanning Turner Contemporary’s first floor galleries, the exhibition will include approximately 450 works, selected from over 4,200 anonymised submissions received from nearly 1,400 artists.
Artworks span sculpture, painting, ceramics, film and photography, including work by internationally renowned artists.
SITTING BY THE DOCK OF THE OUSE 2019 By Joanna Myles will be part of the hang selected by the open call panel.
The theme for this year’s Glyndebourne competition was ‘Forces of Nature’. We were looking for artworks that celebrate, represent and question our insoluble relationship to nature, either taking opera as the inspiration or interpreting the theme through ideas of cultivated gardens and celebrated landscape views or wild, complicated natural phenomena and threatened environments.
VISUAL ARTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF GLYNDEBOURNE, ON AND OFF THE STAGE, AND THE ANNUAL TOUR ART COMPETITION, WHICH HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE 2013, OFFERS A PLATFORM FOR NEW ARTISTS TO RAISE THEIR PROFILE. 2021’S TOUR ART COMPETITION CHALLENGES NEW ARTISTS TO SUBMIT AN ARTWORK BASED ON THE THEME OF ‘FORCES OF NATURE’.
